McAdam game and all Fundy High Basketball has been cancelled this evening.

Please note that in case of a storm that would cancel school tommorow all basketball would be cancelled again.

Fundy JV vs. McAdam

Fundy wins 64-49.

Early on in this game it looked like the Mariners lack of size and experience due to 3 starters missing with injuries would hurt them. As the game progressed though younger players stepped up and the Mariner depth wore away at the visiting Warriors.

Fundy was led by 17 points from Colby Craig and a dozen from Oliver Dussault. McAdam responed with 19 from Andrew Jameson.

JV Gorge Shoot Out

What a great tournament. Every single Mariner should be proud of their effort this weekend. The JV boys finished 2nd overall with their only loss being to AAA Simonds High School who won the entire tournament. Overall the coaches were very happy particularly with the improved play of the younger players as the tournament went on.

Game 1 Summary

In the first game the first place team in the AA JV Northwest Conference the Devon Park Eagles faced off against Campobello. While the Vikings hung tough, the Eagles pulled away with a physical offense and defense grinding out a 55-42 win.

Game 2 Summary

Simonds High faced off against the home team Mariners. The hosts took a big blow early with starter post Dylan Hall breaking his finger trying to deflect a pass. He was lost for the remainder of the weekend. The injury and some aggressive play by the larger/faster Simonds Seabees overwhelmed some of the younger Mariners early. The Mariners struggled to find was to score against the phsyical and aggressive Simonds High defense and battled hard in a 62-43 loss.

Game 3 Summary

Devon Park and Fundy locked horns in an early morning battle Sat. This was a defensive battle the whole way the the Eagles and Mariners keeping each other off the scoreboard as much as possible. The Mariners trailed most of the way until the minutes but were confident as every player had played and applied pressure on the heavily used Devon Park starting core. In the final three minutes the game long deficit quickly turned into an insurmountable lead for the Mariners who ended up winning 48-42. This handed the Eagles their first loss to AA competition all year. The only downside for the Mariners was the loss of another top player (Tanner Thompson) who left to get stitches in his chin immediately following the game.

Game 4

In the other morning game the Simonds Seabess had their way with the Campobello Vikings. The Simonds defense took over early turning mistakes by the Vikings into points. Jumping out a 20 point lead early the game settled down with Simonds eventually winning 75 - 42.

Game 5

In a break from JV action the host Mariners Varsity squad took time away from the table duties to take on the AAA Hampton Huskies. The game lost some of its luster when the Huskies only arrived with 6 players. The Mariners turned this into an opportunity to play everyone and ended up winning easily 74-56.

Game 6

A highly anticipated matchup had Devon Park at 1-1 facing the 2-0 Simonds squad with a chance to create some tournament drama on the line. Very early on it was evident this was not going to be the case. The Eagles made a number of mistakes and had very poor shooting early to allow Simonds to jump out to a 30 point lead by halftime. While the Eagles showed their true colours in the 2nd half if was too little, too late as the Seabess hung on for an easy 74-52 win.

Game 7

The last game of the tournament was a dandy. The two Charlotte County teams put on a real show. The short handed Mariners and the hungry Vikings put on an offensive show in the first half. With the Mariners in foul trouble the top VCikings players took advantage scoring at will. The Mariner's younger bench players, having a complete 180 from their intimidation in the Simonds came did not back down an inch when given a chance to prove themselves. In fact over the course of the game every single Mariner put up points. Being down 3 in the final minutes the Mariners didn't panic. Cutting the lead to 1, the going ahead on 2 free throws with 30 seconds to go. Finally some clutch free throw shooting sealed a hard fought 65-61 win for the home team.

Harvey 71 - Fundy 57 - Varsity Boys

(Warning! I'm really not in the mood to write about this game, but I'll do my best.)

Last night a listless effort from the home town Mariners lead to a 57-71 defeat at the hands of the Harvey Lakers. Credit to the Lakers who defended and rebounded hard all night and made shots when they were given the chance. The Lakers especially took advantage of their trips to the free throw line shooting 11-15, while most trips their by the Mariners ended up wasted on 7-17 shooting.

From the outset the game was sloppy and the Mariners couldn't seem to mount any sort of energy. Despite some strong individual performaces by Eric Young 14 of Fundy's first half 22, and Jarred Weston playing his heart out on the boards and hustling but only ending up with 10 points the weak team play of the Mariners was eventually their undoing.

The Mariners struggled to find ways to score all night resulting in a 38-22 deficit at half time. The 2nd half was more back and forth but neither team really managed to establish any sort of momentum over the final 20 minutes. The final was 71-57.

Campobello vs JV Mariners

In their first home league game of the year the host Mariners overcame a poor start to roar back in the 2nd half and pull away.

In the game played at Fundy High on Dec. 1 a handful of fans for each team watched a very competitive basketball game. Early on the game lacked some competitive fire as both teams seemed happy to walk up and down the floor looking to do simple things. As the game moved towards halftime the pace of the game picked up and both teams started attacking hard on both ends of the floor. At the half the Mariners were down 30-29.

In the second half the Mariners seemed to find their scoring touch and brought better energy on their home floor behind the strong play of Ashton Bradford and Dylan Hall on the offensive and defensive end with solid rebounding and in the score book. With a comfortable lead going into the 3rd quarter the Mariners spent most of the 4th working in players who had seen limited action up until that point. The vikings tried to take advantage playing hard up until the final whistle. The final score was 70-64 for the home team.

Leading scorers for Fundy were Ashton Bradley with 20 and Dylan Hall with 18. Jeremy Miller answered for the Vikings with 33 in the first 3 quarters before fouling just before the 4th.

JV @ GM

In a hard fought game the visiting Mariners came out just shy in a 72-71 overtime loss to the host Breakers.

After arriving in the early afternoon the boys played a game beginning at 4pm and jumped out to an early lead. By the 2nd quarter the home breakers had managed to take a lead on some strong passing and poor spacing by the Fundy defense. GM lead at 1/2 time 45- 35.

In the second haf the Mariners defended with better effort and forced an overtime by tieing the game 59-59 to end regulation.

In the overtime frame the Breakers pulled out a back a forth struggle hitting the game winning free throw in the dying seconds.

JV Boys @ CAMPO

A little short handed by injury and travel restrictions, the Fundy Mariners travelled to play Campobello. In the first 1/2 Fundy played as many of the boys as they had in order to get people time and to save legs after their 3rd game in 4 days. While everyone was scoring the defense was a little suspect early on. This led to a 1/2 time deficit of 41 - 33.

In the second 1/2 with some tightened rotations the boys stepped up managed to score 43 in the final 2 quarters while holding Campo to 24. The final being 76-65

Leading the way for the Mariners was Ashton Bradley with 21, Colby Craig chipped in with 12, and Dylan Hall added 10.

Good Luck to the boys this week as they take on 2-0 Harvey High School at home. I also hope Tanner Thompson's finger heals well and quickly as I know how much he wants to play and the team misses him.

Blue vs. White Game

Friday night was a great experience.

Everyone in attendance got lots of playing time and the coaches were impressed with the aggression shown on both sides. A little scrappy early in the year, but overall I thought the experience was really positive.

Special notes coming out of the evening:

- Josh Carrier scored his first basket in a competitive game situation as a basketball player.
- Greg Healy and Elliot Thorne may have set a record for must unnecessary consecutive collisions.
- Coach Edwards definitely helped out the JV's on the boards.
- If Cory Moore and Jon Henry are willing to be that physical with people on their program, other schools and players may need to watch out.
- That official sure was good looking.

Varsity Boys vs SJDA

Depending on your perspective it was an amazing or very anticlimactic beginning to the Fundy High Varsity Boys basketball season.

In their season and league opener they were hosted by the nearby Sir James Dunn Algonquin. SJDA's first varsity boys team in a number of years was badly outmatched by the Mariners. Fundy's team played everyone basically equal minutes rolling lines every 2-3 minutes. Everyone put forth a solid effort and it showed in the early 33-0 first quarter score after 10 minutes.

As the game wore on the visiting Mariners did a variety of things to try to keep the game as competitive and positive as possible. Pulling their defense back to half court and trying to make extra passes offensively. This made little difference as the half time margin had grown to 53-4.

In the end the Mariners steadily pulled away despite a variety of tactics being practiced to run time off the clock. They won handily 101-10.

The next action for the Mariners will be Friday night in the Blue and White Game scrimmaging the JV team.

Wednesday, November 11, 2009

JV Boys - Mcadam vs. Fundy

In a high paced game the Fundy Mariners got some pay back from last years trip to Mcadam with a 36 point win in their season opener.

After giving a small lead to the home team in the opening minutes Fundy came on strong applying tremendous pressure defensively to a clearly out matched and much younger McAdam team. By half time the Mariners had built a commanding 45-13 lead. This ended up turning into a 76-40 victory for the visiting Fundy squad.

Every player dressed for Fundy recorded points on the score sheet. Leading the way was Dylan Hall with 18 pts on 9-12 shooting. Ashton Bradley chipped in with 13 and Alex Nadeau added 8.

Fundy has a scrimmage with the Varsity boys Friday night and then a league game in Campobello on Saturday.

Provincials

Both Mariner teams had moderately successful provincial runs in Age Class.

The midget boys lost to Lancaster, beat Carleton North and and split with KVBA's "B" winning the more important one to finish 3rd.

The Juvenile boys had a tough schedule playing the back to back game on both days. Day 1 they lost to Oromocto by 5 and then to tournament champion Grand Manan. On the second day they lost to host Campobello by 9 and then to Ormocoto in the Bronze Medal game by 4.

A solid age class expereince for both teams, we look forward to the summer when the boys teams combine to make a club team that plays MBA camp week and in a tournament at the end of July in Saint John.

Harvey Game

Fundy boys were live on Cable 10 in Fredericton last Friday night for a league game in Harvey. They certainly put on an etertaining show for anyone who tuned in . In a game Harvey needed to clinch a playoff berth Fundy and Harvey High played a defensive battle.

The game had less than 50 total points scored in the first half with the home side clinging to a 27-22 advantage. In the 2nd half what was a defensive battle became a war. The officials let both teams bang getting to the rim was an exercise in attrition. Late in the 3rd qaurter some sloppy play by the Mariners allowed the home team to push their lead to 15.

After a drawn out battle for points in the final qaurter the Mariners had to start sending Harvey to the line. The final was 59- 43 for the home side.

Jarrad Weston and Eric Young each had 9 to lead the Mariners.

Samuel de Champlain

Sam de Cham game Tuesday Night was cancelled. The game on Wednesday at home went ahead though.

The Mariners jumped out to an early lead thanks to some hot shooting hitting 3 of their first 4 threes. While the offense continued to have success, some questionable defensive rotation allowed the visiting Jaguars to stay in the game. The score at the end of the first was 24-18 for the Mariners.

The second quarter was more of the same with an early jump out for the Mariners, followed by some sloppy play late. The lead at half time was 39-31.

The 3rd quarter was almost a disaster for Mariners who only managed 6 points in the entire frame. Battling foul trouble and poor decision making, the Mariners defense held the Jaguars to 10 points in the quarter to only be down 1 heading into the final frame.

The opening minutes of the last frame were back and forth the teams exchanging hoops. Finally in the last five minutes the Mariners regained their early form to go on a quick 12 -2 run over a 3 minutes span to put the game away. The final was 69-58.

Leading scorers for the Mariners Eric Young with 15, and Ryan Gallagher and Jarred Weston each with 14. SDC responded with 12 points each from Dominic Beaulieu and Eric Ringuette.

Fundy @ Campobello

Top seeded Campobello pulled away to 20 point win over the Mariners.

The host Vikings came out flying the in first quarter to jump out to an early 30-17 to end the first. By half the game had settled down with the Mariners having a strong defensive quarter narrowing the decifit to 43 - 34.

A strong 3rd quater push the lead back into double digits for the vikings, and as the game wore on each teams subs exchanged hoops to have the game end in an 85-65 win for the home team.

Harvey vs FHS

Harvey managed to out last the Mariners in Fundy.

After a strong first hald performance highlighted by buzzer beaters at the ends of each quarter by the Mariners, they could not hang on to a five point lead throughout the 2nd half. As the game wore on foul trouble for starters and a late injury to the Mariners high scorer that game let Harvey get a late lead, and pull away once the Mariners started fouling.

Leading scorers for the Mariners were Jarred Weston with 15, Reese Gaudett 13, Ryan Gallagher 11.

Leading scorer for Harvey Chad McCann with 21.

X-mas Break

It was a roller coaster x-mas break for the Mariners. Days before the break senior and leading scorer Billy Muxworthy was removed from the team.

The Friday prior to the break the boys traveled to ESA getting an easy win.

Then came a week off followed by two tournaments in 6 days.

Fundy hosted the Holiday Mariner Cage Classic on the 29th and 30th of Dec. The six team tournament saw Fundy lose two more starters to injury and end up playing a tough schedule of Simonds, Grand Manan and Fredericton. The short handed Mariners ended up o-3 while the tournament champion was St. Stephen going 4-0 and posting wins over Grand Manan, Simonds and Campobello twice.

The final weeked of the break Fundy visited the Hartland Huskies to attend their tournament.

In the opening game Fundy had a rough first half but came on strong late to lose a tight game to Cambridge Narrows. In the evening game the Mariners faced the hosts and played their best game of the break, rolling to a 20+ point victory. In the consolation game against Miramichi Valley the Mariners showed the toll of playing with 8 players 6 times in 6 days. After a listless first half the Mariners showed pride in a second half charge to end up losing by 14.
