Local Players hit TOP 40

Former Mariner Basketball Academy Summer Campers and Fundy Minor Association players who played last season on the Middle School basketball teams at Fundy High have been recognized by the provincial sporting organization. BNB has selected Kaitlin French, Emily Baks and Alexander Wilkins to the Top 40 players lists for U14 basketball players in NB.

This selection was made following a Jamboree in Fredericton this past weekend where the top 80 boys and top 80 girls in middle school around the province were all brought together to compete. Following this day of games selection commitess using feedback from coaches created Top 40 lists. These athletes are now invited to a Bantam Elite camp for 6 days in Fredericton this summer to introduce them to concepts, training methods and coaches whose job is to groom them for potentially representing their province in National competition later in their careers.

Our congratulations to all players selected.

MBA Midgets mine Silver in Petticodiac.

In a great weekend of basketball the Mariner Basketball Academy Midget team went 3-1 to earn a silver medal at BNB Provincials.

In their first game the Mariners played local rival Grand Manan who's JV team had split with the Mariners the in the high school season. These two groups of players knew each other well having played many times in mini and middle school. The Breakers attacked hard trying to keep pace with the Mariners who were using all of their depth to send wave after wave of pressure at the Island team. In the end as the game wore on it became clear the Mariner depth would take its tole as the Mariners went on to a 16 point victory.

In the 2nd game the Mariners played the Midget team from Dalhousie. With only a handful of players on the bench they were no match for the pressure applied by the MBA team who coasted to victory.

In the semi-final game the Mariners played the much larger and stronger host team from Petticodiac. Early in this game it appeared that the Panther's size and strength would cause the Marienrs enough problems at both ends to be the difference. By halftime though the Mariners had worn out the Panthers who were in foul trouble trying to keep ahold of the relentless tide of fresh speedy Mariners. Early in the 3rd quarter the Mariners had jumped out to a 26 point lead which they then used to comofortably hold on for a 14 point win.

This set up a finals match vs to undefeated teams: MBA and an allstar team of midget aged players from Harvey and McAdam. While the Mariners battled hard a combination of factors became their undoing. Playing their 4th game in 30 hours at a break neck pace, combined with foul trouble trying to contain the Harvey teams best player, ended up having the Mariners dig a hold they couldn't recover from in a 9 point loss.

Playoff Summary

Well what a wild a woolly end to Mariner Basketball Season.

The JV Boys attended provincials in Perth-Andover meeting the hosts in the quarterfinal game. The game went to the wire with the Mariners scoring inside at will, but the host Southern Victoira Vikings taking advantage of every turnover and missed shot to break long and throw over the top the Mariners. In the end the game came down to a controversial ending with shots and fouls being called after time should have expired on the home squad. Due to some erroneous clock management, the home side escaped with a 1 point victory. Ending the Mariners playoff run. This was only the 3rd loss to AA JV competition all season.

The senior boys advanced to regional play hoping to qualify for entrace into the sectional level of the NBIAA senior basketball tournament for the first time since the mid-90's. That and almost much more happened.

Ironically enough in their play-in game at regionals they faced the senior squad from Southern Victoria High School (the same school who had eliminated the JV's  earlier in the day. This game was hosted at Oromocto High School by the Devon Park Eagles. The 3rd place in the southern conference Mariners were slight favorites of the Vikings who were the number 2 seed in the west. The Vikings were led by 2 time all-star Mason Kinney and a supporting cast that had only lost 2 conference games all year. The Mariners were 5 and 5 in their conference. Though in their overall record the VIkings had only managed a handful of wins vs. non conference opponents were as the Mariners were a strong 9-3 in non conference play.

This game was tight from the outset with the the Mariner defense doing everything it could to make the Viking Allstar a non factor. Half way through the 2nd quarter with the Mariners up by a dozen and Kinney on the bench for the Vikings the game looked to be in hand. However the Mariners couldn't match the intensity of the Viking role players in the dieing moments of the half and entered the locker room down 2.

In the 2nd half the Mariners endured foul trouble of their own but a 27 point performance from Greg Healy and some timely play by grade 10 substitute Brad spear allowed the Mariners to hold on for a 7 point win. This win earned the Mariners a chance to play in the sectionals the next weekend.

The next day during the seeding portion of the tournament the Mariners would face the 1st Ranked McAdam Warriors and 2nd Ranked Harvery Lakers. Both teams had beaten the Mariners twice each already this season. In a surprising turn the Mariners almost upset both teams only to fade late. In the McAdam game Ryan Gallagher led the team with a huge 38 points, only to have the McAdam all-star score 40 in a 3 point loss for the Mariners. The Harvey game had more strong play from the Mariners who held a 12 point lead early in the 3rd quarter but in the final 16 minutes of the game the tole of 2 tough games and 3 in 20 hours  wore the Mariners down and they eventually fell by 14.

This left the Mariners facing a long drive to Sugarloaf to face the provincially top ranked Bruins of Sugarloaf Senior High School. In their first trip to the Final 8 in more than a decade and in hostile territory vs a top flight program the Mariners showed up determined to play. The first quarter was a defensive battle with the Mariners ending up down 14-11 at the end of the first. In the second behind some hot 3point shooting and a crowd of close to 400 the home team surged to a large lead up 41 - 17 at half.

The Mariners came out in the 2nd half determined to cut into the lead and slowly but surely continued to make strides down 19 going in the fourth. The Mariners would get as close as 10 late in the 4th quarter before finally falling by 12 to the eventual AA provincial champions.

Wild Wild Week

Well I hope there was enough excitment for you last week.

The JV's hosted GM in a battle for second place. If the Mariners could win by 2 or more then they would clinch themselves soul possesion of  2nd place in the southern conference. The Mariners had Dylan Hall returning to the lineup from injury for the first time since early Dec, but were missing Tanner Thompson.  From the jump ball the Mariners appeared ready to play and were out working their opponents at both ends. In the first half the Mariners managed to get everyone into the ball game and still hold an 8 point advantage.

In the 2nd half the Mariners put on big pushes early in both the 3rd and 4th quarters to build comfortable leads.  It was with 4 minutes to go in the 4th down 27 that the visitors finally emptied their bench and conceeded defeat. The home side did the same leading to a furious finish with GM''s bench playing hard and Fundy coasting to a 12 point victory.

That Thursday the JV Mariners went to visit the undefated RNS Riverhawks looking to avenge an 8 point loss from the previous week. The Mariners were at full strength for the first time in 2010 and the Riverhawks were missing their best player. This led to a massive turnaround from the previous week with the Mariners winning by close to 45 points.

The only Varsity action last week had the boys at Grand Manan late friday night. Following the girls game the boys went out and ended up in a wild affair on the Island. In an emotional  game in front of large crowd the short handed Mariners were in all sorts of foul trouble which led to a 12 point defecit at half time.

Coming out in the 2nd half with 4 players in foul trouble and facing an energized hostile crowd the Mariners responded, with a great defensive effort highlighted by Jon Henry and Sean Dougan's work to deny the Breakers best player the ball for most of the 1/2. While the game remained intense the Mariners tough defense forced turnover after turnover, though some poor shooting and decision making  didn't allow them to  bridge the gap quickly.

Over the whole of the 2nd half Fundy battled back finally tieing the game late leading to a very exciting last minute. With the game tied and less than 40 seconds to play Jon Henry went to the line for the Mariners. He missed both free throws but offensively rebounded his own miss and was fouled again to return to the line.

Once again with the game on the line he was unable to capitalize on his free throw chances but Jarrad Weston rebounded the 2nd miss putting it back up and in for the Mariners first lead since early in the game. The home team came down the floor and was fouled on a shot attempt with 11 seconds left. Going to the line with a chance to tie the game the Breakers best player missed the front end and then connected on the 2nd shot.

Down one and needing to foul to get the ball back the home team picked up full court for the first time all night. Trying to find an open teammate the Ryan Gallagher hoisted a pass the length of the floor that was deflected and bounced away from 2 Mariners before ending up out of bounds back in the hands of the home team. They home squad came down the floor turning the ball over under tremendous pressure from the Mariners.

After a time out the visitors inbounded the ball safely and sent one of the teams best free throw shooters Greg Healy to the line with a chance to push the lead to 3. Unfortunately he  missed both giving the Breakers a chance to throw the ball long, only a have it tipped and have the game end with a broken play and the ball rolling about on the floor. This left the Mariners winners by a narrow margin of 63-62.

IT was a pretty light games week.

The JV boys lost a squeaker at home to RNS in a battle for 1st in the southern conference.

The Varsity boys hosted SJDA to kick of the Varsity girls home tournament. The final in that game was 85-30 for the home side.

Finally the JV boys went to play in a touranment in Woodstock over the weekend. Taking on eventual tournament champions Simonds High and a Woodstock High School Exh. team made up of Varsity and JV players. It was a tough first day for the Mariners losing both their round robin games. In the consolation game though the Mariners came out on top of Harvey.
