Then the Mariners have 7 days off to rest and come back ready for their 2nd half schedule.

Campobello Tournament

Weather played havoc with the schedule moving all the games to Saturday. Cambridge Narrows couldn't make it so it became a 3 team round robin.

Campobello played Fundy in the first game. Apparently no one told the Mariners the game had started until the 2nd quarter. The first ended with the mariners having given up 33 points and down 22. The Mariners to their credit battled, while still not playing great defense began attacking the back boards and transitioning hard to up the tempo. By half time it was 58-42 and had the makings of a great ball game. The third and 4th quarters were more of the same with the Mariners cutting the lead down to single digits late but never able to get enough stops to overcome their early short comings.

The final was 105-95. PLayer of the game for the Mariners was Billy Muxworthy with 28.

In the second game the Mariners were forced to play back to back in a contest with the Western Conference leading Devon Park Eagles. It was another hard pressed contest with a tied score of 42-42 at half time. The second hald slowed down considerably with the Eagles trying to stay disciplined and the Mariners showing the effects of back to back play.

The Mariners led until late in the 4th quarter, when foul trouble, injuries and the effort of 2 hard pressed games caught up with them. The Eagles mounted a late run to win 78-72.

Player of the Game for Fundy was Mircea Dugalici.

Tournament All- Star for Fundy was Jarred Weston.

McAdam @ Fundy

Another tough loss for the Mariners. Mcadam jumped out to an early lead, and while the Mariners battled hard to get back into the game, they eventually fell short running out of gas late.

The scores by quarter were: 22 -14 (Mcadam), 39 - 30 (Mcadam), 60 - 52 (Mcadam), 86 -66 (Mcadam.) The Warriors shot 24-33 from the free throw line, while the Mariners made 6-9.

Leading scorers:

Fundy - Billy Muxworthy 17, Mircea Dugalici 13, Ryan Gallagher 10.
McAdam - Matt Carmicheal 27, Brandon Moffit 23, Andrew Mcgillicudy 15.

Some bright spots for the Mariners:

-The improved play of Grade 11 student Ryan Gallgher who has begun taking a vocal and active role on both offense and defense. His aggressive play has been the needed turn for the Mariners.

- Last year's Midget Provincial 3 point shooting champion Mircea Dugalici showed a return to form going 4-6 from beyond the arc.

- 5 different Mariners scored from beyond the arc demonstrating confidence in their shooting.

- While not getting up many attempts the Mariners free throw shooting continues to improve with a 66% showing.

FHS @ RNS

The Mariners dropped to 0-4 in league play this weekend. THe boys lost a poorly played game @ RNS 69-50. Offensively the boys seemed out of sync all day. They only managed 5 points in the opening frame, and all day seemd to be a step ahead or behind every play with the ball in their end.

RNS game out and stayed with their game plan for 40 minutes. The Mariners struign together spurts and runs at points but couldn't put up sustained effort. The leading scorers were Matt Pain for RNS with 21 though 14 of those came in the 2nd quarter. Ryan Gallagher lead the Mariners with 17, his top offensive performance of the season.

Fredericton @ Fundy

In an all FHS show down what looked like an easy win for the Mariners turned into ball game in the dying minutes thanks to some great shooting from Fredericton.

Fundy jumped out to an early 11 - o lead and took control of the game for 3 quarters. It was 22 -14 after the 1st, 45 -29 at half, and 61-43 going into the 4th. With some sick and dinged up players the Mariners tried to escape the second half with an easy win but Scott Dickinson from Fredericton connected on 4 threes in the 4th quarter to make it a single digit game. This forced the Mariners to make some clutch freethrows and good decisions late in the ball game. The final was 81-72 for the home team.

Leading the way for the visitors was Scott Dickinson who had 23 points including 6 three's. For the Mariners Billy Muxworthy connected for 21 coming off the bench. Fredericton shot 13-19 from the foul line, while the Mariners managed an improved 11-22.

Fundy's overall record improves to 3-3. They are o-3 vs Southern opponents and 3-0 vs Western teams.

Weekend Games + Standings

Well in a big weekend for league play in the South AA Conference, things were wild.

Friday night Campobello wins by 4 in McAdam, before surviving with a 2 point win in SDC the next day. Harvey handles Grand Manan in Harvey, then Grand Manan makes a late push to beat Fundy by 3. RNS beats Fundy by 3 in a foul filled affair. Clearly there will be no easy wins for anyone this year.

Friday Night.

RNS 63- FHS 60

Matt Pain lead the scoring for RNS with 20, while Eric Young had a huge second half to finish with 18 for the Mariners. The game was choppy at best with 52 fouls called, 32 of them against the Mariners. The foul line was the deciding factor with RNS going 26-39 from the foul line, while FHS went 5-18.

Saturday

GMCS 68 - FHS 65

Jason Guptill paced the winners with 24 and Billy Muxworthy scored 19 for the Mariners. The game was back and forth with both teams holding leads in both halfs. Even though the Mariners had a shot to tie it late, some poor shooting in the 4th quarter and a 6-16 effort from the line hurt the cause.

Current Standings for the AA South

1. Campobello (3-0)
2. Harvey (2-0)
3. RNS (2-1)
4. McAdam (1-1)
5. Grand Manan (1-1)
6. Fundy (0-3)
7. SDC (0-3)

McAdam vs. Fundy

In the first league tilt of the season the the Mariners found the cozy confines of the McAdam Warriors less than inviting. The boys dropped the contest 77-59 to drop their overall record to 2-1 and their league record to 0-1.

It was a game of 2 halves where in the first 1/2 play was frenetic and wide open with Mcadam pushing to a 50-39 half time lead. The second half was a complete turn around with neither team mounting much offense.

Fundy hurt themselves again at the free throw line going 10-29 and by putting Mcadam there 35 times. The Mariners played hard but couldn't keep the string of McAdam big men out of the middle and off the glass for extended periods of time.

Leading the way for the Mariners again were Billy Muxworthy 18 and Jarred Weston 12.

Top scorers for the Mariners were Billy Muxworthy (24), Jarred Weston (18), Greg Healy (7)and Ryan Gallagher (7).

The Mariners shot 5-20 from the foul line.Fundy generated a number of turnovers through pace of play and tenacious pressure. The held ESA's leading scorer J. Karemangingo to a season low 6 points.

Canterbury Game

Well the boys had their first taste of the New "AA" league and they liked it.

In our first game of the year the boys game out with a big time effort early on and made sure to take advantage of their opportunities. It was clear early on that CHS was not going to be able to contain the boys strength and athleticism.

With a 1st Quarter score of 27-7 and a halftime lead of 58-8 by the time the boys went to the locker room the contest was decided. Out of a respect to the hosts who had done them a favour by replacing a game on their schedule the boys came out in the second half and made sure the game didn't get out of hand. They took the air out of ball chewing up clock on offense and working on set ways to score.

10 of 11 Mariners scored. 4 Mariners ended up in double digits (Reese Gaudett, Jarred Weston, Billy Muxworthy, Mark Dwyer). The team shot 8-11 from the free throw line in a noted improvement from an area of concern last season. The final was 81-21.

Overall it was a strong performance effort wise and a good opportunity for everyone to work on execution. The boys next game is Wednesday at home against ESA.

Season 08-09

It looks like a promising season ahead. With high nubmers of at tryouts for both varisty and JV combining with the number of returning players we appear to be ready to take a large step forward this season.

The 08-09 season will see some organizational changes:

- There are now 4 practice slots with the latest being gym time from 8:00 - 9:30
- The JV head coach will now be Coach Jonathon Eagan, assisted by Mr. Daye.
- Both teams will now play their NBIAA seasons in the AA league, which now is all teams province wide with less than 500 students from grades 9-12.
- Both teams should play in an exclusively southern conference which will mean no league games up the western side of tehr province farther than Harvey.

There will be more updates with schedules, times, and travel information as the year goes on.
